Rep. Jeff Flake Calls for Post-Election Return of U.S. to Robbery by Corporate Insiders Who Destroyed Their Own Companies and Caused Worldwide Crisis

Speaking on Fox News Sunday, Arizona Rep. Jeff Flake said he looked forward to re-election to the House of Representatives, where he expects his fellow Republicans will win at least a 7,000-seat majority. He called for a return to letting corporate insiders rob America blind while bankrupting their own companies and plunging the world economy into an even more effective Great Depression-like crisis. Flake suggested that after the election, President Obama should resign immediately and that the late Austrian economist Fredrich Hayek be sworn in to replace him as the new U.S. President.

The Arizona Republican said he was delighted with the prospect of "limited government run by people of limited intelligence" like himself and vowed that in the next Congress he would "work very hard to further concentrate wealth in this country among the few billionaires with the prescience to provide me with campaign contributions."

Crabby, Constipated Congressman Jeff Flake's Credo: Think Small and Carry a Big Ego

Thomas L. Friedman's column in today's New York Times has an anecdote whose punch line reminds us of blow-dried, empty-headed morons like Congressman Jeff Flake, the inmates who'll soon be running the Congressional asylum:

Kishore Mahbubani, the dean of the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy at the National University of Singapore, is over for tea and I am telling him about what I consider to be the most exciting, moon-shot-quality, high-aspiration initiative proposed by President Obama that no one has heard of. It’s a plan to set up eight innovation hubs to solve the eight biggest energy problems in the world. But I explain that the program has not been fully funded yet because Congress, concerned about every dime we spend these days, is reluctant to appropriate the full $25 million for each center, let alone for all eight at once, so only three are moving ahead. But Kishore interrupts me midsentence.

“You mean billion,” he asks? “No,” I say. “We’re talking about $25 million.”

“Billion,” he repeats. “No. Million,” I insist.

The Singaporean is aghast. He simply can’t believe that at a time when his little city-state has invested more than a billion dollars to make Singapore a biomedical science hub and attract the world’s best talent, America is debating about spending mere millions on game-changing energy research.

Welcome to Tea Party America. Think small and carry a big ego.

That's Jeff Flake's credo. Except his petty penny-pinching -- granted, his chronic constipation would make anyone a little grumpy -- isn't about millions. He begrudges a few thousand spent on projects all over the country and ridicules them -- with sorry puns that must get a lot of laughs wherever morons congregate -- in his "Egregious Earmark of the Week."

He'll never spend a dime to do shit to help people, real people. He'll spend plenty of his political capital to make sure the Capitol adds to the national debt and balloons the deficit by cutting the taxes of his billionaire buddies/campaign doors.

To some of us, that's egregious. If you're in the tiny minority of non-moron voters in Arizona's Sixth Congressional District, you probably agree.

Ultra-Conservative Congressman Jeff Flake Calls for Lowering Minimum Wage to Zero; Claims Change Will Boost Employment

This newswire story got buried this week, but we wanted to call it to your attention:

A Republican congressman from Arizona today called for lowering the minimum wage to zero -- in order, he said, to boost hiring and reduce high levels of unemployment.

Asked about Connecticut Senate candidate Linda McMahon's proposal to lower the minimum wage, Rep. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) said he would prefer that the minimum wage be lowered to zero.

"It's an assault on freedom to force employers to pay their workers a certain level of salary," Flake told a Capitol Hill news conference on the eve of the congressional recess for the election campaign. "Further, the minimum wage is definitely a culprit in our high unemployment rate. It discourages corporations and small business owners from hiring more people at low -- or even no -- wages."

Flake said that the minimum wage was clearly unconstitutional as contemplated by the founding fathers. "People like Washington, Jefferson and Madison certainly didn't intend this as a legitimate role for government. It's a kind of slavery they surely wouldn't approve of. It's too bad that we strayed so far from their principles."

The Arizona congressman said he will introduce a bill in the next session of Congress to lower the minimum wage to nothing. His own re-election is considered a foregone conclusion.

Why Does Millionaire Congressman Jeff Flake Hate Arizona's Hard-Working Middle-Class Families?

If you're part of a hard-working middle class family in Arizona, millionaire Congressman Jeff Flake hates you.

While your family has been struggling over the past eight years, Jeff Flake has been doing nothing in Congress but trying to get his made-up face and supercilious sound bites on camera and making sure that he and his millionaire and billionaire buddies and campaign donors have made out like bandits.

He's interested in the rich, not struggling middle-class families. His votes show that. Today the Wall Street Journal's front page cries out, "LOST DECADE FOR AMERICAN INCOME":

The inflation-adjusted income of the median household — smack in the middle of the populace — fell 4.8% between 2000 and 2009, even worse than the 1970s, when median income rose 1.9% despite high unemployment and inflation. Between 2007 and 2009, incomes fell 4.2%.

The data, released Thursday, underscore the extent to which U.S. households relied on government benefits — and each other — to weather the recession and how living standards at the middle of the middle class have stalled. The recession has been particularly hard on young workers and young families. Younger workers have a harder time qualifying for unemployment benefits because they have a shorter work history.

That has prompted many young adults to move in with family, or put off leaving home in the first place. The number of 25-to-34-year-olds living with their parents rose 8.4% to 5.5 million in 2010 from 2008. Within that age group, 42.8% fell below the poverty threshold—$11,161 for an individual.

The Census snapshot indicated that the gap between the best-off and worst-off Americans widened a bit more in 2009, a long-standing trend.

But corporate lackey Jeff Flake votes against every government program that would help hard-working middle-class families. He doesn't believe they're worthwhile. That's why he wants to eliminate unemployment insurance, social security, Medicare, Medicaid, food stamps. He believes in social Darwinism, the law of the jungle, that the free market will take care of everyone - even though history has proven him an asshole again and again.

Hey, you may be a struggling East Valley middle-class family, but you're going to vote to re-elect Jeff Flake, aren't you? To give him and his fat-cat Republican buddies another chance to lower your income? Jeff Flake counts on schmucks like you to give him another two years to keep screwing you while he laughs all the way to the bank. Otherwise you'd be voting for me or Democrat Rebecca Schneider.

Why Anti-Government Fanatics Like Jeff Flake Will Ruin America If They Get in Charge of Things

Even conservative columnist David Brooks, writing today at the New York Times, scolds the kind of anti-government, vote-no-on-everything fanaticism of Jeff Flake and his nutty ideological soulmates:

Every political movement has a story. The surging Republican Party has a story, too. It is a story of virtue betrayed and innocence threatened.

Through most of its history, the narrative begins, the United States was a limited government nation, with restrained central power and an independent citizenry. But over the years, forces have arisen that seek to change America’s essential nature. These forces would replace America’s traditional free enterprise system with a European-style cradle-to-grave social democracy.

These statist forces are more powerful than ever in the age of Obama. So it is the duty for those who believe in the traditional American system to stand up and defend the Constitution. There is no middle ground. Every small new government program puts us on the slippery slope toward a smothering nanny state.

As Paul Ryan and Arthur Brooks put it in The Wall Street Journal on Monday, “The road to serfdom in America does not involve a knock in the night or a jack-booted thug. It starts with smooth-talking politicians offering seemingly innocuous compromises, and an opportunistic leadership that chooses not to stand up for America’s enduring principles of freedom and entrepreneurship.”

Ryan and Brooks are two of the most important conservative thinkers today. Ryan is the leading Republican policy entrepreneur in the House. Brooks is president of the highly influential American Enterprise Institute and a much-cited author. My admiration for both is unbounded.

Yet the story Republicans are telling each other, which Ryan and Brooks have reinforced, is an oversimplified version of American history, with dangerous implications.

The fact is, the American story is not just the story of limited governments; it is the story of limited but energetic governments that used aggressive federal power to promote growth and social mobility. George Washington used industrial policy, trade policy and federal research dollars to build a manufacturing economy alongside the agricultural one. The Whig Party used federal dollars to promote a development project called the American System.

Abraham Lincoln supported state-sponsored banks to encourage development, lavish infrastructure projects, increased spending on public education. Franklin Roosevelt provided basic security so people were freer to move and dare. The Republican sponsors of welfare reform increased regulations and government spending — demanding work in exchange for dollars.

Throughout American history, in other words, there have been leaders who regarded government like fire — a useful tool when used judiciously and a dangerous menace when it gets out of control. They didn’t build their political philosophy on whether government was big or not. Government is a means, not an end. They built their philosophy on making America virtuous, dynamic and great. They supported government action when it furthered those ends and opposed it when it didn’t.

If the current Republican Party regards every new bit of government action as a step on the road to serfdom, then the party will be taking this long, mainstream American tradition and exiling it from the G.O.P.

That will be a political tragedy. There are millions of voters who, while alarmed by the Democrats’ lavish spending, still look to government to play some positive role. They fled the G.O.P. after the government shutdown of 1995, and they would do so again.

It would be a fiscal tragedy. Over the next decade there will have to be spending cuts and tax increases. If Republicans decide that even the smallest tax increases put us on the road to serfdom, then there will never be a deal, and the country will careen toward bankruptcy.

It would also be a policy tragedy. Republicans are right to oppose the current concentration of power in Washington. But once that is halted, America faces a series of problems that can’t be addressed simply by getting government out of the way.

The social fabric is fraying. Human capital is being squandered. Society is segmenting. The labor markets are ill. Wages are lagging. Inequality is increasing. The nation is overconsuming and underinnovating. China and India are surging. Not all of these challenges can be addressed by the spontaneous healing powers of the market.

Most important, it would be an intellectual tragedy. Conservatism is supposed to be nonideological and context-driven. If all government action is automatically dismissed as quasi socialist, then there is no need to think. A pall of dogmatism will settle over the right.

Republicans are riding a wave of revulsion about what is happening in Washington. But it is also time to start talking about the day after tomorrow, after the centralizing forces are thwarted. I hope that as Arthur Brooks and Paul Ryan lead a resurgent conservatism, they’ll think about the limited-but-energetic government tradition, which stands between Barry Goldwater and François Mitterrand, but at the heart of the American experience.

Jeff Flake's anti-government fanaticism will make sure he takes away everything good that the federal government has ever done. He'll end your Social Security, Medicare, and even support for interstate highways. He's a menace to America, a threat to our way of life. Jeff Flake's plans to destroy the America he so despises must be opposed by all patriots.

Rep. Jeff Flake: He'll Work His Ass Off for the Billionaires Who Pay His Bills

As Frank Rich wrote in his exposé of the billionaires who bankroll the Tea Party and radical Republicans like Arizona's sure-winner-as-a-five-term Congressman Jeff Flake:

Their program opposes a federal deficit, but has no objection to running up trillions in red ink in tax cuts to corporations and the superrich; apologizes to corporate malefactors like BP and derides money put in escrow for oil spill victims as a “slush fund”; opposes the extension of unemployment benefits; and calls for a freeze on federal regulations in an era when abuses in the oil, financial, mining, pharmaceutical and even egg industries (among others) have been outrageous.

The radical billionaires of Koch Industries gave safe-seat Jeff Flake $12,500 in campaign contributions in 2008 and more this year.

When he and his Republican allies control Congress, they can start taking away unemployment insurance, Medicare and Social Security and shoveling more money to their big-corporation benefactors like Koch Industries, which has recently received almost a hundred million dollars in federal funding.

Jeff Flake: a Congressman who will stand up for the rights of billionaires and do shit for 99% in the East Valley. If you're really stupid - and most of you in the East Valley are - you'll vote for him in November.

Phony Deficit Hawk Jeff Flake Supports Huge Tax Cuts for the Very Wealthy Despite Its Adding $650 Billion to Our Deficit

Here's an excerpt from Paul Krugman's column in today's New York Times:

For a while, leading Republicans posed as stern foes of federal red ink. Two weeks ago, in the official G.O.P. response to President Obama’s weekly radio address, Senator Saxby Chambliss devoted his entire time to the evils of government debt, “one of the most dangerous threats confronting America today.” He went on, “At some point we have to say ‘enough is enough.’”

But this past Monday Jon Kyl of Arizona, the second-ranking Republican in the Senate, was asked the obvious question: if deficits are so worrisome, what about the budgetary cost of extending the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy, which the Obama administration wants to let expire but Republicans want to make permanent? What should replace $650 billion or more in lost revenue over the next decade?

His answer was breathtaking: “You do need to offset the cost of increased spending. And that’s what Republicans object to. But you should never have to offset the cost of a deliberate decision to reduce tax rates on Americans.” So $30 billion in aid to the unemployed is unaffordable, but 20 times that much in tax cuts for the rich doesn’t count.

The next day, Mitch McConnell, the Senate minority leader, confirmed that Mr. Kyl was giving the official party line: “There’s no evidence whatsoever that the Bush tax cuts actually diminished revenue. They increased revenue, because of the vibrancy of these tax cuts in the economy. So I think what Senator Kyl was expressing was the view of virtually every Republican on that subject.”

Now there are many things one could call the Bush economy, an economy that, even before recession struck, was characterized by sluggish job growth and stagnant family incomes; “vibrant” isn’t one of them. But the real news here is the confirmation that Republicans remain committed to deep voodoo, the claim that cutting taxes actually increases revenues.

If anything, Jeff Flake, darling of the Club for Greed A/K/A the Club for Growth, is more for tax cuts than the rich than Kyl or McConnell. He's made his reputation with his moronic little press releases highlighting an earmark of the week: some piddling sum spent for a community center here or a park there - public facilities that Flake's contributors, uber-wealthy banksters and fat cats, don't use.

But he favors not just extending the wealthy-favoring Bush tax cuts but making them larger! Jeff Flake, supposed deficit hawk, would add over a billion dollars to the deficit with his risky scheme to cut taxes on the rich even more.

Yet he won't help middle-class people who find themselves unemployed. Yesterday we got an email from an Apache Junction voter in his fifties. Due to a corporate merger and subsequent cost-cutting, he was laid off at Christmas by a national chain as a manager in a Tempe Marketplace store. That day he'd got a letter that his lifeline, his unemployment check, would stop, "pending congressional action." Currently, Republican senators are blocking passage of this action.

Big Oil's Congressional Lackey Jeff Flake: Guilty of Criminal Neglect in Causing the Gulf Oil Spill

In his few public statements on the horrendous environmental disaster and human tragedy of the Gulf oil spill, Arizona's Sixth Congressional District's weaselly Rep. Jeff Flake has said nothing but place the blame elsewhere - mostly on the Obama administration.

This is typical of Flake, a fanatic laissez-faire corporate lackey whose million-dollar-plus campaign warchest has made him so invincible politically that he exudes arrogance on an hourly basis. The thousands upon thousands of dollars he has taken in from oil companies and related corporate PACs, combined with his outdated, unshaken faith in a dead ideology he gives more allegiance to than he does to his East Valley constituents, led to Flake's role in causing the BP oil spill.

In 2005, despite unfairly high oil prices and declarations from President Bush that no more incentives were needed to encourage more offshore drilling, Jeff Flake strongly supported reducing the cut of proceeds government could collect on oil and gas drilling in deep waters. (In this, of course, Flake added to the federal budget deficit he hypocritically claims to be so concerned about - at least when he's near a reporter or TV camera.)

At the same time that Jeff Flake called for new drilling incentives that even President Bush said were unnecessary, he fought to gut government oversight - in his crazy belief that no government is always better than any government. Seven times since his arrival in Congress in January 2003, Jeff Flake voted to reduce regulatory staffing levels by more than 15 percent - despite more complex deep-water operations and concerns voiced by the Interior Department.

It's not as if Jeff Flake didn't know the risks he was taking with people's lives and livelihoods and the Gulf ecosystem. Congress's own research arm repeatedly cited a 2004 Coast Guard study find that its "oil spill response personnel did not appear to have even a basic knowledge of the equipment required to support salvage or spill clean-up operations."

Nevertheless, Jeff Flake repeatedly - deliberately - failed to act to ensure adequate oversight of offshore drilling operations.

He cannot escape blame for this disaster. Yes, BP certainly was reckless, greedy and negligent, but the company couldn't have done it without the complicity of its congressional cheerleader Jeff Flake.

Now Congress needs to immediately pass legislation to direct all future royalties to the Treasury Department, thereby reducing the incentives for a venal career politician like Jeff Flake to use new proceeds as a piggy bank.

Also, Congress needs to mandate that in the future, any legislative action leading to an increase in oil production also creates a concomitant increase in regulatory oversight.

If he were a real man, Jeff Flake would step forward and admit his own role in undermining offshore safety and encouraging risky drilling - and then do something as a congressman to make sure disasters like the Gulf oil spill don't happen again.

Jeff Flake: Out of step. Out of control. Out of his fucking mind.

Arizona's Compassion-less Clueless Camera-Hoggin' Congressman Jeff Flake Blocks Economic Recovery - But Here's How to Fight This Entrenched Politician

How does a regular little guy fight entrenched power?

Arizona's Sixth Congressional District has a career politician Congressman, the fanatic Jeff Flake, who's standing in the way of full economic recovery and laughing in the faces of working people in the East Valley and all over America.

With his assaults on labor and working families, his outlandishly regressive tax policies and his slavish devotion to corporate power, this captive of K Street lobbyists Flake is blocking any attempts by the federal government to stop this onerous economic Great Recession.

In fact, he's happy about it. It's laissez-faire capitalism at its finest, says the foolish or fiendish Flake. Now his starve-the-beast philosophy of fiscal austerity and do-nothingism has spread, and we can't do any more stimulus or even help those who are under water, unemployed or struggling to pay bills like so many of us in the East Valley.

But here are three suggestions to go around our career-politician congressman:

First, Congress should grant workers a temporary holiday from the forced savings program known as Social Security.

To stimulate the economy now with no long-term increase in government debt, Congress should therefore temporarily exempt a portion of wages from the Social Security taxes imposed on workers; at the same time, those exempted wages would not be credited in computing that worker’s future retirement benefits.

For example, a 40-year-old earning $50,000 and paying annual Social Security taxes of about $3,000 could see those taxes cut to about $2,000. The added $1,000 in his paycheck, along with similar amounts for other workers, could be a huge stimulus to the economy.

In the future, of course, there would be a price to pay: the growth in that worker’s retirement benefits would be slightly reduced — much as if he had taken off four months without pay.

But the emphasis should be on “slightly.” Because benefits are typically paid over decades, the cost of a temporary $1,000 tax cut would be spread over many years; it could amount to a reduction in annual pension benefits of less than $100. The holiday could even be limited to workers under the age of 55, to allow plenty of time for them to salt away a few extra dollars for retirement once the economy improves.

Best of all, the costs and benefits would be matched to each worker. Those who get a pickup today would pay it back later on. This way, the Keynesians would get their stimulus, and the deficit hawks [like the predatory oddbird Jeff Flake] could sleep better at night.

Second, we need to block heartless, heedless, headless politicians like Jeff Flake from denying those who can't find jobs some relief.

Congress should restore the automatic triggers in unemployment compensation from the 1970s before nuts like Flake got in charge of the government (and they won't let go now, thirty years later!)

In 1970, Congress passed the Federal-State Unemployment Compensation Act, which established an automatic trigger: whenever unemployment increased to a certain point at a national or a state level, benefits were extended by 13 weeks.

The costs of these benefits were shared by the states, which paid them out of their regular unemployment insurance accounts, and the federal government, which increased taxes by about $8 per worker.

In the ’80s and ’90s, however, Congress diminished the effectiveness of the program by eliminating the national trigger, raising the state triggers and altering the trigger calculations in such a way that they hardly ever took effect

[Now], whenever a state’s total unemployment rate rises above 6.5 percent or jobless claims increase by more than 20 percent, benefits should be offered for an additional 20 or more weeks. This program should be fully financed by the federal government, thereby alleviating states’ burden during the recession.

An automatic trigger would provide a tailored response to those states with the worst labor markets and eliminate the need for Congress to revisit this issue every few months. Most important, we could reduce some of the uncertainty for the jobless.

Finally, Congress should allow small businesses to speed up the rate at which they can write off depreciating assets. Doing so would save employers money and spur entrepreneurial risk-taking, without increasing the national debt.

True, in the short term the government would lose tax revenue. But it is the same amount the government would lose by allowing the write-off anyway, just over a shorter period of time.

And there could be a fee for anyone using the accelerated schedule, equal to the interest the government would pay on the money it needed to borrow to cover its temporarily lost revenue.

Of course, Congress would want to make sure companies put their savings into new investments. To that end, it could devise a system for rewarding entrepreneurs based on the number of jobs per dollar depreciation created or the environmental worthiness of the project. And the accelerated write-off could be adjusted for specific assets across numerous industries, spurring development in areas where the public can most benefit, from new power plants to hospitals and nursing homes.

The tough part would be devising regulations and administering such a program. Politics is bound to intrude, though an independent review panel could help keep undue influence at bay.

Nevertheless, the reward for getting this policy right would be great — for government, investors, creditors and taxpayers — and it would encourage entrepreneurial enthusiasm throughout the economy.

With a little innovation and a lot of hard work (something our tropical-isle-vacationing congressman knows nothing about),

even before the voters boot out fishy fanatics like Jeff Flake, we can end this recession and put Arizona's working families in a better place.

Ayatollah of Austerity Jeff Flake Leads Coalition of the Cruel and the Clueless to Bring America Down

The ayatollahs of austerity, led by Arizona's fanatic laissez-faire congressman Jeff Flake, seem to be prevailing in their efforts to bring America's economy down even further. The prevailing "wisdom" is that of Herbert Hoover during the Great Depression: fight a severe economic downturn by imposing even more pain on American citizens. And keep those who are in pain worse off than they would otherwise be.

Jeff Flake has voted against extending unemployment benefits throughout his long tenure in Congress, during which the U.S. has lost nearly a million jobs. Like the radical Senate candidate in Nevada, Jeff Flake believes the jobless have no one but themselves to blame. He's against any unemployment benefits because he believes people collecting them are not desperate, just lazy.

Maybe it's easy to say when fat cats have bankrolled your entire career, throwing millions at you every quarter so you can avoid a serious campaign for re-election while you do their bidding and go against the ordinary people who you're supposed to represent.

Jeff Flake is more for Exxon Mobil than for Mesa, more for Goldman Sachs than for Gilbert, more for J.P. Morgan Chase than for Chandler, more for Qwest than for Queen Creek, more for AIG than for Apache Junction.

We're in a real danger of a double-dip recession, as last Friday's unemployment numbers show, and Jeff Flake neither wants to help those Americans who are under water or keep the rest of America from drowning in a second Great Depression. By saying no to all short-term stimulus, he makes the long-term debt and deficit worse and makes regular people's lives that much worse - just when states like Arizona are cutting their budgets, laying off police officers and teachers, and already causing a severe fiscal contraction.

But like the socialists and communists who denied economic reality in thrall to a theory, an intellectual fanatic like Jeff Flake doesn't give a shit about reality or real people.

Meanwhile, yesterday the economist Robert H. Frank proposed some innovative ways to promote economic recovery while bringing down the deficit. We highlight them (boldface ours) here:

There is no conflict — absolutely none — between our twin goals of putting the economy back on its feet and reducing long-term deficits. On the contrary, government could take many steps that would serve both goals simultaneously.

For example, it could create a program to restructure consumer debt. Although rates on 10-year Treasury bonds are only about 3 percent, many consumers still carry tens of thousands of dollars of credit card debt at 20 percent or more. This burden has been a continuing drag on spending. The federal government could reduce it by borrowing at 3 percent and lending to consumers at 8 percent under a one-time debt-restructuring plan.

With their debt service payments cut by more than half, consumers could increase spending immediately. And the five-percentage-point spread on money lent under the program would help cover its administrative costs, and maybe even relieve short-run government budget pressure.

(Banks might complain, but because the money owed to them would be repaid in full, and because they insist that their high interest rates barely cover their costs, such complaints would ring hollow.)

Another useful measure would be a carbon tax — or its approximate equivalent, a cap-and-trade system — scheduled for a gradual phase-in after the economy has again reached full employment. This would stimulate an immediate, huge jump in private investment without the government having to spend a penny.

Why? Investment is currently depressed because companies can already produce much more than people want to buy. But once a carbon tax was announced, the design of nearly every existing machine or structure that uses or produces energy would be rendered suddenly obsolete. Motor vehicle engines, electric power plants, refrigerators, air-conditioners, furnaces — all would have to be redesigned for greater efficiency.

The resulting flood of research and investment would enhance our ability to cope with future energy shortages and would serve another crucial purpose. Taxing carbon could eliminate the catastrophic risk of vastly rising global temperatures by the end of this century; it would be a prudent act, quite apart from its utility as an economic stimulus.

The tax would generate no revenue until its phase-in, so it wouldn’t reduce the current deficit. But deficits are a long-run problem, and its enactment alone would increase creditors’ confidence that we are committed to solving it.

Another productive measure would be to increase public investment in infrastructure. When road repairs are deferred for just two to three years, total maintenance expenses can more than double — even if we ignore the cost of accidents and vehicle damage caused by potholes. Spending an extra dollar now to save two dollars three years from now is an investment with an annual rate of return of more than 18 percent.

Making that investment with money borrowed at 3 percent would not only put people to work immediately, but would also help balance government budgets. And after decades of infrastructure neglect, there are many other public investment opportunities that promise returns even higher than 18 percent.

Here’s a final example, which I’ve long advocated: The government could enact a progressive surtax on extremely high levels of consumption, with a phase-in beginning once the economy recovers. This would reduce long-run deficits while stimulating extra spending immediately. And, like the other examples, it would be a step worth taking even apart from those effects.

Because incomes of the wealthy have been growing sharply in recent decades, luxury consumption has also been rising rapidly. But beyond a certain point, additional consumption raises the bar that defines what counts as adequate, without any increase in objective measures of well-being. And because savings would be untouched by this surtax, it would help steer resources away from keep-up-with-the-Joneses spending races and into productive investment. That would increase productivity growth.

Under a consumption surtax, people would report their incomes and their annual savings to the I.R.S., as many now do for tax-exempt retirement accounts. A household’s annual consumption would be calculated as the difference between its income and savings. Congress might apply the surtax only to annual consumption beyond $500,000.

THE resulting revenue would reduce deficits after the phase-in. In the meantime, just the knowledge that the surtax was on the way would stimulate a temporary surge in consumption, as wealthy families rushed to build additions to their mansions and make other purchases before the tax took effect.

In short, the government could take many steps that immediately bolster spending and employment, while also addressing deficit worries. But that’s not where we appear to be headed, as big spending cuts are being proposed in the name of fiscal responsibility.

But as almost 10 percent of the labor force remains unemployed, such cuts would instead be the height of fiscal irresponsibility.

Don't let irresponsible fanatics like Jeff Flake get away with murdering American families' dreams.

Every effort to dig the nation out of the unemployment abyss "is being stymied by excuses about the deficit," said Richard L. Trumka, president of the AFL-CIO. "It is a national disgrace that members of Congress are heading home to celebrating our nation's birthday after having voted repeatedly not to create jobs or to extend unemployment aid."

You can either re-elect a fanatic career politician like Jeff Flake who will do nothing but sit on his gym-toned ass while American families' lives get worse or vote for a change.
